Maryland Democratic Party Election Day Poll Coverage

Questions and answers

What does a poll volunteer do?

You stand outside a polling place, greet voters as they arrive, offer the Democratic sample ballot, and have a short conversation about Question 3. You do not need any experience. The talking points page has everything you need to say.

When are the shifts?

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3. Polls are open from 7 AM to 8 PM. Shifts are 7 to 10 AM, 10 AM to 1 PM, 1 to 4 PM, and 4 to 8 PM. Take one shift or several.

Can I volunteer in a county where I do not live?

Yes. You can sign up at any polling place in Maryland.

Where do I get sample ballots and materials?

Each county's Democratic Team sends its volunteers the pickup details by email before Election Day. When a county has published them, they are also on that county's page.

What are the rules at the polls?

Each polling place has an electioneering boundary marked with signs, usually 100 feet from the entrance. Stay outside it, be friendly, never argue with a voter, and follow the instructions of the election judges. Your county page lists the rules your county Board of Elections publishes.

What is a floater?

A floater is on call during a shift and goes wherever a volunteer cannot make it. Your county's Democratic Team will text or call you with a polling place on the day.

What is the sign crew?

Where a county runs one, the sign crew puts up signs at a polling place before Election Day and takes them down after the polls close. Sign crew shifts appear only in counties that have turned them on.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. On the sign-up form, open "Bring a guest", add their name and choose which of your shifts they join. You work those shifts together, so each one needs 2 open spots, and your guest moves or cancels with you. Someone who shares your email address should come as your guest rather than sign up separately.

What if I can no longer make it?

Please cancel from the link in your confirmation email so another volunteer can take your place. If you lost the email, use "My shifts" at the top of this page to get a new link.

Who sees my information?

Your name, email and phone number are shared with the Democratic organizers coordinating Election Day in your county, so they can send you materials and reach you on the day. They are not sold or published.

Who runs this sign-up?

The Maryland Democratic Party, for Democrats in every county in Maryland.

I have a question that is not answered here.

Reply to your confirmation email and it will reach the organizers. Your county page may also list a county contact.
